An overview of the different tire types on our electric scooters

March 9, 2023

Our Levy electric scooters come with pneumatic tires that use inner tubes. We also offer solid rubber tires as an alternative. There are tradeoffs to each, and we leave it up to your personal preference.

Pneumatic Tires (with Inner Tubes)

All of our scooters now ship with pneumatic tires that use inner tubes — the same setup found on most electric scooters and bicycles. The inner tube holds the air pressure inside the tire, and they can be inflated with any standard bike pump to the recommended 50-60 PSI.

The main benefit of pneumatic tires is the smooth ride they provide. Going over bumps is much more comfortable as the air-filled tire absorbs shock and keeps the board more level. They also offer excellent traction on both dry and wet surfaces.

If you get a flat, the inner tube will need to be replaced. Inner tubes are available on our website and are inexpensive. Most bike shops can handle the swap, or you can do it yourself with our guide. You don't need to replace the whole tire — just the tube.

It's important to top up the tire pressure often, at least every other week when riding frequently. Riding on low PSI can cause your tires to more easily puncture or develop leaks around the sidewall.

Solid Rubber Tires

The main benefit of solid tires is that they are puncture proof and require no maintenance. However, because they are not pneumatic, these tires do not provide any shock absorption compared to air filled tires.

With solid tires the ride won't be quite as smooth, especially if you are riding on rough pavement. Additionally, since these tires don't provide as much natural grip as air-filled tires, traction on wet surfaces will be reduced.

Converting Pneumatic Tires to Solid Tires

Solid tires can be retrofitted on existing wheels for both the 8.5" and 10" models. We recommend having them installed by an experienced mechanic, as they require the proper tools and heating methods to put on your rims.

If you would like to convert to solid tires, you can find them on our website. You can also find more detailed instructions in our article: Converting Pneumatic Tires to Solid.
