Police Report Requirement for Stolen or Missing Items

March 18, 2026

Overview

If your order is reported as stolen or missing after confirmed delivery, Levy Electric requires a police report to be filed before any claim can be processed. This policy protects both our customers and our company from fraudulent claims.

When Is a Police Report Required?

A police report is required in all of the following situations:

  • Package is marked as delivered but you claim it was not received
  • Package was stolen from your delivery location
  • Order contents are missing or appear tampered with

How to File a Police Report

  1. Contact your local police department — File a report for stolen property or mail theft. You can typically do this in person at your nearest station or, in some jurisdictions, online.
  2. Provide the following details:
    • Your order number
    • Carrier tracking number
    • Estimated value of the items
    • Date and time of confirmed delivery
    • Your delivery address
  3. Send us the report number — Reply to your support ticket with the police report number or a copy of the filed report so we can proceed with your claim.

What Happens If You Don't File a Report?

Failure to file a police report when required is a violation of our claims policy. Without a filed report:

  • Your missing/stolen item claim cannot be processed
  • No replacement or refund will be issued
  • Any associated chargeback will be disputed with the evidence on file

California Theft Laws & Chargebacks

Under California law, filing a false claim of non-receipt — including initiating a chargeback for goods that were delivered — may constitute theft or fraud:

  • Petty Theft (Penal Code § 484/488) — Theft of property valued at $950 or less is a misdemeanor, punishable by up to 6 months in county jail and/or a fine of up to $1,000.
  • Grand Theft (Penal Code § 487) — Theft of property valued at over $950 is grand theft, which may be charged as a felony, punishable by up to 3 years in state prison.
  • Theft by False Pretenses (Penal Code § 532) — Obtaining money or property through false representations (such as claiming non-receipt of a delivered package) is a separate criminal offense.
  • Federal Wire Fraud (18 U.S.C. § 1343) — Chargebacks processed electronically across state lines may also constitute federal wire fraud.

Our Commitment

Levy Electric preserves all delivery records, carrier evidence, correspondence, and photographic proof of delivery. This evidence is submitted to financial institutions during chargeback disputes and may be provided to law enforcement if a fraudulent claim is identified.

If you have a legitimate missing package claim, we are here to help — simply file the required police report and we will work with you to resolve the issue promptly.
