GPS Accuracy with Levy Fleets software and IoTs
Geofencing is a crucial technology for managing and monitoring electric scooters and bikes, providing valuable data on their location and ensuring compliance with operational boundaries. This article give an overview the typical accuracy range of geofencing in various environments, factors that may affect accuracy, and best practices for ensuring reliable and precise geofencing data.
Typical Accuracy Range of Geofencing in Different Areas
Urban Areas:
In dense urban environments, geofencing accuracy typically ranges from 10 to 20 meters (32.8 to 65.6 feet). The presence of tall buildings and other structures can cause signal reflections and multipath errors, slightly reducing the accuracy compared to more open areas.
Suburban Areas:
In suburban settings, where there are fewer tall structures and obstacles, the accuracy generally improves. The typical range is 10 to 14 meters (32.8 to 45.9 feet), offering a more precise geofencing capability due to better GPS signal reception.
Rural Areas:
Rural areas offer the best conditions for GPS signal reception, resulting in the highest geofencing accuracy. Here, the typical accuracy range is 6 to 10 meters (19.7 to 32.8 feet), benefiting from the open space and minimal interference from buildings or other structures.
Factors Affecting Geofencing Accuracy
Several factors can influence the accuracy of geofencing data:
•Weather Conditions: Severe weather, such as heavy rain or snow, can attenuate GPS signals and slightly reduce accuracy. However, this effect is generally minimal and temporary.
•Obstacles: Physical obstructions, including buildings, tall trees, and other large structures, can block or reflect GPS signals. This is particularly significant in urban areas, where the “urban canyon” effect can cause notable accuracy reductions.
•Signal Interference: GPS signals can be disrupted by electronic devices, Wi-Fi networks, and other sources of radio frequency interference, affecting the overall accuracy of location data.
Ensuring Reliability and Precision of Geofencing Data
To optimize geofencing accuracy and reliability for electric scooters and bikes, several best practices are employed with our Fleet Software.
•Using GPS via SIM Card and Rider’s Cell Phone:
The system integrates GPS modules with SIM cards on the scooters or bikes and leverages the rider’s cell phone GPS. This dual-source method enhances location accuracy and reliability. The scooter’s GPS provides a primary location signal, while the rider’s phone can supplement data through GPS and cellular network positioning.
•Assisted GPS (A-GPS):
A-GPS enhances standard GPS by incorporating data from nearby cell towers and Wi-Fi networks. This approach improves location accuracy, especially in urban areas where direct GPS signals may be obstructed.
•Regular Calibration and Updates:
Our team will regularly perform firmware updates on the scooters or bikes IoT device when software changes are released that can assist in GPS accuracy.
